Skype - spy vs spy and how the uncrackable service may be dismantled

Skype is currently very hard to intercept and decrypt. This has been a frustration for many security services.

It now appears that the ongoing dispute between Skype's founders may lead to eBay (current owners) redesigning the core technology (due to the IP dispute).

Any reworking of the code will be very welcome news for security services who apparently can't easily decrypt and/or intercept the current version.

Conspiracy stories... please form an orderly queue.

  1. Well, there's little cospiracy in here.

Security Services (worldwide) try the very best to do their job. The "community" tries hard to make that job very hard.

Even if and when Skype is dismantled and/or recoded, there will be around a number of tools to encrypt traffic. For example OpenVPN to create a crypted tunnel in a Point-to-Point communication that would be otherwise "in the clear".

Still, honest Security Service workers may ring at your (or my) bell with a well formed and signed Search Warrant and ask (kindly) for the keys or get a Warrant for "Environmental Surveillance".

Dishonest Security Services workers will still ask you for the keys, and not necessarily "kindly" :-/

In any way I don't see likely anyone trying to decrypt any message with a key longer than 56 bits. A "warrant" or a "unkindly request" are much better easier, time saving, and cost saving solutions.
